What is Fluency? Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately and effortlessly at an appropriate rate with meaningful phrasing and intonation. Students who lack fluency ready word-by-word in a choppy manner. Students who lack fluency often have a more difficult time comprehending information or stories they have read. To be able to read fluently, students must use proper phrasing, rate, and intonation. Why Fluency? Fluency provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Because fluent readers do not have to concentrate on decoding the words, they can focus their attention on what the text means.
