What is Fluency? Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately and effortlessly at an appropriate rate with meaningful phrasing and intonation. Students who lack fluency ready word-by-word in a choppy manner. Students who lack fluency often have a more difficult time comprehending information or stories they have read. To be able to read fluently, students must use proper phrasing, rate, and intonation. Why Fluency? Fluency provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Because fluent readers do not have to concentrate on decoding the words, they can focus their attention on what the text means. Fluency Definitions Phrasing - the way words are chunked together, marked by pauses Rate - the speed at which something is read Intonation - the emphasis given to particular words or phrases |
