"Writing is simply thinking through the end of a pen!"

During writing time, students discover ways to express themselves by putting their words on paper. We use what we know about letter sounds, word families, and word wall words to put our thoughts together. Students are allowed to use "invented" spelling for words which they are unsure of how to spell. To use "invented" spelling, students spell words EXACTLY as the words sound to them.

To begin the daily writing block, the teacher starts with a mini-lesson about the the topic of the day. After the daily mini-lesson, the students write about their own topics, using what they have learned. The teacher then conferences with students while they are working to check their progress on skills that have been taught in the writing block. After the conferences, the students share what they have been working on with each other.
